Current Move On From KC Original Katie Bowen, Lock Up Kristen Hamilton Long Term

The Kansas City Current aren’t done making moves, but for now we have a little more clarity about 2022’s roster. Tuesday saw Kansas City waive Katie Bowen and Michelle Maemone, while buying out the contract of Mariana Larroquette. The calculous behind these moves is pretty simple, the roster size needs shrinking, Bowen and Maemone will most likely find destinations through the waiver wire, and Larroquette most likely has options built into her contract making it easy to buy her out after year 1.

Katie Bowen is the curious decision, tough decisions will have to be made in this league but Bowen was 8th in minutes for KC last season including 2 assists while being versatile enough to play in the midfield or in the back.

Perhaps it is a salary decision, KC has new defensive options they picked up through the draft, and while Bowen was a fringe contributor — being a contributor on the last place team doesn’t guarantee your roster spot.

Viewing this decision in a vacuum might leave you coming away looking at a 27 year old international in Bowen and wondering, “what gives?”.

However, when you look at the circumstances — KC needed to re-sign the players acquired through the ARod trade. Hamilton and Mace were both extended this past week, Hamilton ranked just below Bowen in total minutes last season while Mace offers a little more roster flexibility and is only 24 years old… if you had to pick 2 out of the 3…
