Eastern Track League: Adrian Martinez Classic
It was a great night for the 2019 Adrian Martinez Classic presented by Hoka One One, and we’re coming down the homestretch of the Eastern Track League Season as well as the USATF qualifying window. That being said, the athletes showed up with their working spikes on and turned in USATF, IAAF and Olympic qualifying times. Let’s dive into the results.
Men’s 800 meter
The High Performance meet kicked off with 2 rounds of 800-meter racing, and it’s safe to say the ETL lead was very much up for grabs as both Quamel Prince and Edose Ibadan would have a showdown as 1 and 2 in the standings. However, it would be B.A.A’s Sam Ellison who would win the race in 1:48.52 with Hoka NJNY’s Chris Geisling close behind in 1:48.73. District Track Club’s Quamel Prince would round out the top 3 in 1:49.45 and adding 1042 points to his lead in the standings… although Prince’s lead would shrink by the end of the night — but more on that later. Atlanta Track Club’s Dylan Capwell can’t be counted out either, as a 10th place finish keeps him in contention heading into DC.

Running 2:02.93 she guarantees her trip to Des Moines and continues her fantastic season. Olivia Baker and Hannah Segrave would round out the top 3 in 2:03.84 and 2:04.09. Agnes Abu finished 8th but her 2:05.02 keeps her atop the standings going into Princeton, but Emily Richards finds herself just 45 points behind her after finishing 4th.

Men’s 5000 meter
It’s a meet record for Willy Fink as he really pulled away from the pack over the final laps en route to a new personal best. It really was a master class in racing given the overall caliber of the field that included Olympians Will Leer, Sam McEntee, and Donn Cabral. McEntee would have to work hard for 2nd as the race behind him was closing hard. Julian Oakley would set a personal best as well in this one as the New Zealander continues to have a fantastic 2019.

Women’s 5000 meter
Qualifiers galore in the 5000 meter as the meet record is blown away by a large margin. Elle Purrier would add another Olympic Qualifying time to the ETL scoreboard as the series continues to prove that it is a breeding ground for competitive races. Purrier had to be careful as she fired to the line, Canadian Jessica O’Connell and Reebok’s Neale were on her heels finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Katrina Coogan (Reebok Boston TC), Kellyn Taylor (NAZ Elite) and Abbey Cooper (New Balance) would all achieve IAAF standards with plenty of time left in the season.

Men’s 1 Mile
In a mile that saw 7 athletes run under 3:59 it was the USATF qualifiers that really draw your attention. UK’s Charlie Da’Vall Grice would really put his stamp on the race, beating Robert Domanic by .64 seconds. Domanic would finish second and come within a second of his personal best. James Randon of Saucony Freedom TC would lean out the top 3 with Rob Napolitano finishing on his heels. Napolitano would finish the night making up major ground on Quamel Prince’s ETL lead — bringing himself within 35 points of Prince’s lead.

Women’s Mile
Helen Schlachtenhaufen is out for ETL glory with her past 2 performances, after a 4:05.49 1500m performance good for 2nd place last week she follows that up with a 4:30.67 win this week. However… It wasn’t a walk in the park for her; this was a tough pack to break. Dom Scott and Heidi See emerge to finish off the top 3 but this was a close race that saw 8th place, Olympian Cory McGee, finish just 3 seconds off the lead… most of that being lost in the final lap.

Brave Like Gabe.
The highlight of the meet has to be Nikki Hiltz honoring Gabe Grunewald during her performance. We lost an incredible member of our community this week and this has to be the greatest way to keep her memory and her infectious attitude alive.
That’s it for this week’s Eastern Track League, What were your takeaways from the meeting? Who are you looking forward to watching next time?
Speaking of next time, The ETL will pick back up at Princeton for the Princeton Qualifier on Sunday June 30th where the 800m, 1500m, 3000m Steeplechase will be up for grabs; you can find info on the meet here.
