Previewing The 2019 USATF Championships: Part 2

Yesterday I went over the first 3 days of USATF action, so today I want to finish the job… it’s the last lap of a 1500m and I’ve always been a hard closer. The final day of USATFs always includes some fireworks — just last year we had Devon Allen and Paul Chelimo win by out leaning their opponents.

Men’s 800m

The 2018 800 meters was won by Clayton Murphy in 1:46.5, these races are rarely a death march to the finish. If you’re Donovan Brazier and Clayton Murphey in 2019 you have to trust that you’ve been tactically smart all year and, ultimately, are just faster than everyone else in the field. Who else has been tactically smart this year? NCAA Champ Bryce Hoppel who was 19 for 19 this year and Eastern Track League Champ Quamel Prince — who chased down Erik Sowinski a few weeks back to win the ETL title outright. This is a tough call; out of Murphy, Harris, and Sowinski, we will probably only see one of them repeat a top 3 finish. Brazier is a lock for me with how his season has looked so far, with Clayton Murphy being a standout so far as well. Then I have watched Quamel Prince upset many athletes throughout the ETL season.

My Picks

  1. Clayton Murphy — 2. Donovan Brazier — 3. Bryce Hoppel…
