St. Louis CITY SC Experiences First Pothole In Centene Stadium Setback

St. Louis CITY SC may have hit a temporary snag in their plans for a proper grand opening of Downtown West’s Centene Stadium. The city of St. Louis inadvertently damaged the stadium’s power grid while working on an adjacent $17 million street project. The stadium and its’ adjacent training facility fully operate on their own power grid under normal circumstances.

“We are working with our construction and operation partners to resolve the current situation with (the stadium’s) internal power distribution system,” the team said in a statement this week. I’m not going to pretend I know everything about how electrical work is done but it has been reported that there was an unmarked conduit that had become damaged and neither side are taking fault for the mishap.

*Side note, as the son of a city employee, none of this is surprising.

That news puts a small damper on an otherwise momentous occasion for the new club. As the 2023 MLS season quickly approaches, St. Louis CITY SC 2 is hosting its’ first MLS NEXT PRO playoff game this weekend. They’ll be battling Dallas FC’s 2 team North Texas FC to hopefully move on to the Western Conference final. CITY 2 clinched the Western Conference during their PK loss to Sporting KC 2 this past weekend in Edwardsville.
