Where is Peng Shuai? “The China That They Imagine”
Where is Peng Shuai? Well, we may actually have an answer.
It was only 1 week ago that Chinese state media released photos and videos of Peng Shuai eating dinner and signing autographs… but it isn’t quite that simple.
Ms. Peng’s social media accounts are still blocked within China and she has yet to officially communicate using any of her personal pages. It is believed that she is in custody of Chinese officials — this first speculated after she alleged a vice-premier of sexual assault on popular Chinese Social media site Weibo. The post was removed shortly after and the ability to like and comment on her posts disabled as well.
The calls from the World Tennis Association, and IOC president Thomas Bach, came afterwards with Novak Djokovic and Enes Kanter amplifying the #WhereIsPengShuai message. However, Chinese officials doubled down on their statement that Peng was free and safe, releasing videos of Peng eating and discussing Tennis in a restaurant with the date highlighted on the door… you know… like most videos shared on social media do.
